Silver Facts in

Silver Facts in Context of Jewelry- Fine Silver and Sterling Silver Difference

Silver is a valuable precious metal and it is really soft and that means it’s ideal for everyday wear.

Silver was one of the first five elements discovered along with gold, copper, lead and iron.

Silver can be broadly classified into two types:

  1. Fine Silver
  2. Sterling Silver

Fine Silver:

Fine silver is basically pure silver, so it’s 99.9% pure. You get this in the market in the form of bars and coins.

Fine silver is considered too soft for jewelry making and thus it is mixed with other metals to make it little harder for use in jewelry.

Sterling Silver :

Sterling silver can also be termed as 925 silver. Both the terms are common when we talk about silver jewelry.

Fine silver being to soft can’t be used directly for jewelry, the alloy (mix of metals) we get after treating fine silver is called sterling silver.

Sterling silver is a combination of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals for example copper. This is an established silver standard.

Sterling silver is a hard metal and is very durable. Its hardness and strength gives a lot of opportunities to play with design and development.

In terms of value it is considered no less than fine silver.
